NEWPORT, RI, June 30, 2004 --
The International Tennis Hall of Fame announced today that a special doubles exhibition featuring
Andre Agassi and Hall of Famer Rod Laver will be played on Sunday, July 11. An ATP Foundation Cup
event, the exhibition will be held at 9:30am on Bill Talbert Center Court at the International
Tennis Hall of Fame. Their Hall of Fame opponents will be announced early next week. This rare
occasion is in conjunction with the International Tennis Hall of Fame’s 50th Anniversary
Celebration and the Class of 2004 Induction Ceremony.
“We're thrilled to be able to present this once in a lifetime match,” Chris Clouser, Chairman of
ATP Foundation said. “Thanks to these legendary players for contributing their time to be part of
this special event and donate the proceeds to the Hall of Fame.”
The ATP Foundation Cup, which is expected to become an annual exhibition, is part of the Hall of
Fame’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. The participants will be awarded Waterford Crystal trophies
presented by Mercedes-Benz.
The team of Agassi and Laver will compete against their Hall of Fame opponents in an eight-game
pro-set that will benefit the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
“This is a very special week for the International Tennis Hall of Fame,” stated Mark Stenning,
Chief Executive Officer of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. “Adding this exceptional match
to our final weekend only strengthens what promises to be one of the most memorable events of the
tennis season.”
Agassi will be in Newport to see his wife, Steffi Graf, inducted into the Hall of Fame on July 11
along with Stefan Edberg and Dodo Cheney. Agassi ranks sixth all-time for career matches won
(799), and has claimed 58 singles titles in his career, including eight in Grand Slam events.
Laver is in Newport for the Hall of Fame’s 50th Anniversary reunion weekend. Laver, the only man
to win calendar Grand Slams in 1962 and 1969, was enshrined in the Hall in 1981. He won a career
total of 20 Grand Slam events: eleven in singles, six in doubles and three mixed doubles titles.
Tickets for the ATP Foundation Cup match are $25 for East Stand and South Stand seats. Tickets
